Word of the Day | Esoteric

As a kid having just learned the joys of reading and writing stories, I had always believed that the knowledge of creating entire book-length works was quite esoteric. I had never dreamed that I would be among the class of writers who could claim such limited and unique skillsets.

As an adult, I have come to realize that there is much more to the creative writing world than what a reader can see from the outside. However, that world is much bigger than the small group of individuals I had imagined it to be. And not all of those individuals may even know what today's word means.

Esoteric | e-sə-ˈter-ik: adjective: designed for or understood by the specially initiated alone; requiring or exhibiting knowledge that is restricted to a small group; of special, rare, or unusual interest

I especially enjoy the use of esoteric when speaking of materials or objects. Stones of esoteric quality may be perceived as precious, and esoteric animals could be considered nothing but legend in some areas. There are all sorts of ways to use the word!

Esoteric | es.əˈter.ɪk: adjective: very unusual and understood or liked by only a small number of people, especially those with special knowledge

Most of the time, I see the word used in writing as the main definition, which is the knowledge contained by a small group of people. I like the idea of it being used in the place of simple words, such as rare and unique. Still, it makes for quite the word to use in any creative writing!

Kal had always thought it a frivolous exercise, a discipline too esoteric for a man who preferred to admire religion from a safe distance.

I for one, plan to use this word in all of its glory. I can only hope that I remember it when the time comes. At least this way, I have a log of all of my favorite words to use as I build my drafts. As always, happy reading!
