Did you know that there is a lot of psychology behind those obstinate commenters on social media and how they adhere to their opinions no matter what kind of logic, reason, or even facts we throw at them? Part of it really is the ease with which we can hide behind our online personalities, especially since we can take a break as needed and turn off that part of us that argues.
Having watched a SciShow Psych about it, I have since stopped trying to reason with people online unless it's about something involving a writing group. And even then, if someone pushes an opinion too much, I'll just leave them be and move on. There's no use in trying to diffuse the situation without agreeing with them, and my sanity simply isn't worth the time.
Obstinate | ɑːb.stə.nət: adjective: unreasonably determined, especially to act in a particular way and not to change at all, despite what anyone else says
With adjectives that involve people, it's important to choose the one that portrays the correct feeling behind it. Are you looking for a show of somewhat irrational or unreasonable stubbornness? Obstinate is your word. Do you need something that implies more of a show of admirable tenacity? Perhaps going with dogged would suffice better.
Another really cool synonym shown by Merriam-Webster is mulish, meaning thoroughly unreasonable obstinacy. There really are all sorts of fun ways to say someone is just stubborn.
Obstinate | äb-stə-nət: adjective: stubbornly adhering to an opinion, purpose, or course in spite of reason, arguments, or persuasion; not easily subdued, remedied, or removed
As if to show perfectly the design of obstinate versus some of its synonyms, today's example shows the feelings that can come as a reaction to obstinate behavior. I already find Daenerys Stormborn is already one of my favorite written characters, and I truly enjoy her chapters, even when I find some of the other characters to be less fun. By the third installment, she has already achieved so much for herself and her followers, so it stands to reason that any form of stubbornness against her decisions is difficult for her to swallow.
His obstinacy made her angry. He treats me like some child.
Of course, even by this point in the series, she is still very young. That being said, with her accomplishments, I could understand why she wishes for the arguments to stop, even with her advisors.
How else would you show obstinacy in your work? What other synonyms do you enjoy? Let me know all that and more, and until next time, happy reading!
