Today, we rescued a kitty from what I would say was an uncomfortable situation. Like any kitty going to a completely new environment, she was a little stressed. My hope was to get her home, clean her up, and clip her claws so that I could get all of the negative things out of the way, but her obstreperous denial left me with quite the mark on my finger. Wisely, I decided that claw-clipping could wait for another day.
The nice thing about learning a new word is finding fun and interesting ways to use it. I am so glad to have suggestions from my audience, and this was the perfect suggestion for today!
Obstreperous | əb-ˈstre-p(ə-)rəs: adjective: marked by unruly or aggressive noisiness, clamorous; stubbornly resistant to control
What I love in particular about obstreperous was the fact that - before today - I didn't even know it existed! To have suggestions from my audience of words I'm not even aware of is quite the game-changer because we can all gush about these words together.
Obstreperous | ɑːbˈstrep.ɚ.əs: adjective: difficult to deal with and noisy
Now, you're probably asking yourself, "Well, what about this new cat is so obstreperous?" Well, she's not really happy with humans, you see. When we did pick her up, she was sedated to help limit her stress levels, and yet she hissed and growled even when I came near the carrier. And for the entire hour car ride home, she would build up all of her energy and then unleash it in an attempt to get out, always resulting in failure.
When we did get home, I did what I had done with my cat, Mowkie, when she was much younger. I grabbed a soft towel and wrapped her up like a nice little angry burrito. By this point, her complaints were made very clear to me. And when I reached in to grab a single paw, all of the claws - on all four feet, mind you - managed to wriggle out. I knew then that claw clipping was not a today thing.
The only downside of such an awesome word is that it doesn't show up in any of my current reads. And because I didn't know of its existence before today, I have no usage of it anywhere in my personal writing. Be that as it may, however, I do absolutely plan to use it in the future.
Do you like crazy words like this? How would you use it in your writing? Let me know in the comments or via message! I would love to hear your ideas! And until tomorrow, happy reading!
