Word of the Day | Sardonic

While sardonic is a wonderful word to use in writing, I am happy to note that there really isn't a way for me to use it in reference to my own life. People who have a twisted sense of humor used to hurt others are not allowed within my selected group of people. Those kinds of people are toxic and should be left in the dust of those of us pushing for excellence each and every day.

Sardonic | sɑːrˈdɑː.nɪk: adjective: humorous in an unkind way that shows you do not respect someone or something

I feel this word is an important one to use in the writing world, as it has its own unique uses that can't quite be replaced by some synonyms, such as sarcastic and satirical. It is designed to be mocking and disrespectful, and it is used to interpret particular expressions or verbal or physical cues. A sardonic character will be open with their scorn and mockery.

Of course, it is not to be confused with ironic expressions, where the statement is one of mockery by clearly stating the obvious opposite. Sarcasm is more of a taunt or jab at another person with the intent to cause harm, and satiric expression imply that the ridicule is more for "censure and reprobation," as Merriam-Webster puts it.

Sardonic | sär-ˈdä-nik: adjective: disdainfully or skeptically humorous, derisively mocking

The nice thing about sardonic expressions is that they don't necessarily have to describe the character as a whole. Characters designed to be typically honest, witty, and fun-loving can still be dragged through the mud enough to enjoy a jab every now and then or get into just enough disagreements with someone to find themselves disdainful of the other person.

That's the joy of personality. Growth and development in characters can lead to some interesting expressions. Characters who are typically angry and cynical can still sometimes smile, and a bubbly character who usually finds the joy in life can still find the irony in situations. It's all about creating depth.

How little she knows, Kal whispered, with a sardonic curl of his lip meant for the Red.

Do you know someone who has regular sardonic or sarcastic comments? Perhaps a beloved character you're reading about or developing? Would you simply use a different word, or do you agree that it has its own unique meaning? Let me know all about it, and until tomorrow, happy reading!
